They can affect anyone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eCommon types\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are many different STIs. An STI check usually includes testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003ePreventable\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese infections are preventable; early detection and treatment is important.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEmpowering individuals to be informed! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"how\"\u003eHow STIs spread\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eSexual contact\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main methods of transmission include unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse\/sex. Some STIs can also be passed on through unprotected oral sex. Use of condoms reduces the risk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eSkin contact\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome STIs like herpes and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) spread through skin-to-skin touching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eOther routes\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInfections can be passed to babies during pregnancy or birth. Sharing needles can spread HIV and other infections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"recognising\"\u003eRecognising STI symptoms\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eOften silent\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany infections show no symptoms. You can have an STI for months or even years without knowing it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eWarning signs\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnusual discharge, pain during urination and sex, genital sores, rashes, or painful blisters may indicate infection. Don’t ignore them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’re unsure, GET TESTED!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"routine\"\u003eMake STI testing part of your routine healthcare\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAn STI test is the only sure way to know if you have an STI.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eA test consists of a blood test and swab(s) and \/or urine.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eYou can usually do the swab(s) yourself - your doctor or nurse will explain how.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eWhen to test:\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you’re sexually active but you’ve never had a test\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you have signs or symptoms\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf someone you’ve had sex with has an infection\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you’re pregnant\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you change sexual partners\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’re worried about a specific sexual encounter, speak to your doctor or nurse about when best to test.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"stitreatment\"\u003eTreatment options for STIs\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eBacterial STIs\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChlamydia responds to oral antibiotics. Gonorrhoea requires an antibiotic injection. Syphilis involves 1-3 shots of antibiotic injections. Even though you feel better, you MUST COMPLETE the full course of treatment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eViral STIs\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eViral infections like HIV or herpes are usually managed with oral medicines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003ePartner notification\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTELL your partner(s) if you’re diagnosed. They need testing too. THIS BREAKS THE CYCLE.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"understanding\"\u003eUnderstanding HIV\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch5\u003eHuman Immunodeficiency Virus\u003c\/h5\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eWhat is HIV?\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA virus that attacks immune cells. It can be passed on to others through vaginal and anal sex, blood (eg sharing needles) and during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eHow it works\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWeakens the body’s ability to fight off infections and diseases, making individuals more vulnerable to other illnesses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eAIDS\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdvanced stage of HIV infection if untreated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe body’s defense system becomes extremely weakened, making the body at risk for infectious diseases and cancer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4 id=\"hivtreatment\"\u003eTreatment\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEffective medications are available and are free for everyone in NZ.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eLiving well\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHIV requires lifelong management. With the right treatment, people will stay well, and cannot pass it on to partners.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEarly detection makes a huge difference!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eHIV treatment and support\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eMedical treatment\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAntiretroviral therapy (ART) controls the virus and keeps people well.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eOngoing care\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRegular check-ups and monitoring of health. Medication adjustments may be recommended over time. Support services are available.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHealthy lifestyle\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cbr\u003eGood nutrition, exercise, and mental health support. Avoid smoking, and vaping, and limit alcohol intake.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAccess\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTreatment is through Infectious Diseases or Sexual Health Services. Treatment is free for everyone.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003ePrevention\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHIV can be prevented by using a condom during sex, or with medicines called PrEP and PEP. Speak to your healthcare provider about what is right for you.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"consent\"\u003eUnderstanding consent \u0026amp; the legal reality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eConsent prevents harm, builds trust, and respects personal boundaries.\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eConsent must be freely given without pressure.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAt any point, you or they have the right to walk away.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eConsent to one activity doesn’t imply consent to others.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eConsent cannot be given while someone is asleep, intoxicated, or under the influence of drugs.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eConsequences:\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eCriminal charges\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf someone does a sexual act without consent, they are breaking the law. This includes unwanted sex or touching, or the taking or sharing of naked pictures without permission. Any of these can lead to imprisonment, a fine, or both.
